Florida singer-songwriter Jayne Kelli built a local following in Tampa Bay by performing her original tunes throughout the area, making appearances on local radio programs and working with fellow musicians.

But for the release of her latest EP, Promises and Dead Ends, Kelli began her push for international recognition by taking her music to Northern Italy.

When she returns to Florida, she plans to return to Hideaway Recording Studio to continue work on her full-length release, Jack for a King.

If you’ve seen a film in the last 15 years, then whether you realize it or not, you’re familiar with the music of Rusted Root.

“This one goes out to the young’ins,” frontman Michael Glabicki said. “We call this song the Ice Age song.”

While the Pittsburgh-based jam band is well-known in rootsy circles, it was the popularity of 1995’s “Send Me On My Way” from Rusted Root’s sophomore album When I Woke that skyrocketed the group to mainstream success.

The single reached number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1995, and it was prominently featured in the films Ice Age, Matilda and The Theory of Flight, as well as the iconic television show Party of Five.

But it wasn’t only Hollywood that garnered Rusted Root so much attention. In its early years, the band was recognized for its rigorous touring and unique fusion of bluegrass and Afro-pop percussion. While this touring slowed in recent years, the band is ready to tackle the road once again; this time in support of its sixth studio album, Stereo Rodeo.

Rusted Root began its most recent extensive tour on May 30 in Utica, N.Y., and it will carry them through October, including a stop at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on June 6. The band headlined the Band Together benefit show for the Lucy Daniels Center. NOTE: See video from the concert.

In addition to Rusted Root, local acts Chatham County Line and The Rosebuds performed outside before the show continued inside with HOBEX.

A special thanks goes to Erica Bustamante of MyNC’s Entertainment blog for hosting Rusted Root in studio B in my absence.

Ohio's Southeast Engine performs on B-Sides

Ohio-based Southeast Engine has created quite a stir with its most recent release, From the Forest to the Sea, with PopMatters going so far as to call it “the first truly outstanding release of ‘09.”

It’s difficult to pinpoint the band’s sound, and that is perhaps what makes Southeast Engine so intriguing. Their unique amalgamation of Appalachian folk and the energy as well as charisma of classic indie rock is derived from the band’s Dayton roots being transplanted to the mountainous region of Ohio that is Athens. Frontman Adam Renmant and his brother, bassist Jesse, even cut their teeth on Dayton indie rockers The Breeders and Guided by Voices.

Lines can also be drawn to the manner by which the band records. From the Forest to the Sea was recorded to analog tape in an 1800s middle school auditorium in the hills of Stewart, Ohio.

The recording “studio” isn’t the only thing vintage about Southeast Engine, however. Keyboardist Billy Matheny rocks a Lowrey Wandering Genie organ circa-1970s while Jesse plays through a Fender Bassman 50.

Paste Magazine describes their sound as “so out of time, and so removed from current musical fads and trends. The freak-folk tendencies, biblical allusions and poetic nature imagery could have originated in 2009, 1969 or 1869.”

From the Forest to the Sea was released Feb. 17, 2009 through Misra Records.

Atlanta-based Howlies stopped by NBC17's Studio B for a performance on B-Sides

Recently named Paste Magazine’s band of the week, Atlanta-based Howlies stopped by NBC17’s studio B on Feb. 2, 2009 for a performance on B-Sides before the band’s gig at Local 506 in Chapel Hill.

Howlies debut album, Trippin’ With Howlies is set to be released Tuesday, Feb. 3 through OverUnder Records and already the band is creating quite the buzz up and down the East Coast with its infectious take on 1950s and ’60s garage rock.

The band pushed the limits of studio B with a full rock set and the use of a smoke machine that thankfully didn’t set off a chain reaction of alarms and sprinklers.

NBC17 would like to thank Harry’s Guitar Shop on Glenwood Avenue and Ruckus Pizza in Mission Valley in Raleigh for kindly loaning us mic stands for this performance.
