Florida singer-songwriter Jayne Kelli built a local following in Tampa Bay by performing her original tunes throughout the area, making appearances on local radio programs and working with fellow musicians.

But for the release of her latest EP, Promises and Dead Ends, Kelli began her push for international recognition by taking her music to Northern Italy.

When she returns to Florida, she plans to return to Hideaway Recording Studio to continue work on her full-length release, Jack for a King.

Jason Arthurs recently sat down at Ivan Howard’s house to shoot a video featuring an intimate take on The Rosebuds’ “Life Like” from the band’s 2008 album of the same name.

“Replacing the original’s flinty electric guitar with an acoustic ease and its deep, distorted bass throb with an accordion’s wheeze,” Indy Week’s Grayson Currin describes, “this take emphasizes the shifts from chorus to verse and the song’s antiphonal structure.”

Flying Tiger Sound guru B.J. Burton handled the audio side of the video while Arthurs sat behind the camera.

Nashville-via-Chapel Hill alternative rock band Roman Candle recently stopped in to perform a few songs for Paste Magazine.

The band played two tracks from the recently released full-length Oh Tall Tree In The Ear as well as “One Hundred Thousand Miles” from the They Say EP.

Paste certainly doesn’t have a shortage of love for Roman Candle, what with the magazine scoring Oh Tall Tree an 89 out of 100 and sponsoring a nationwide tour alongside The Deep Vibration.

One of the latest bands to begin to make its mark on the local music scene is the duo of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz. Armed with an acoustic guitar, fiddle and of course mandolin, Mandolin Orange came to be when a hometown girl met a boy from the Upper East Side — of North Carolina, that is.

Playing an array of bluegrass, folk and Americana, Mandolin Orange is the story of a boy, a girl and the beautiful music they make.

Like most bands trying to make a name for themselves in a market overwhelmed with talent, Mandolin Orange tours relentlessly; which means there are ample opportunities to catch the duo in a live setting. Coming up, you can check them out at Nightlight on Aug. 19, The City Tap in Pittsboro on Aug. 28 and Open Eye Café on Aug. 29.

Greg Humphreys has been a fixture in the Triangle music scene since this mid-’80s; having led his bands Dillon Fence and HOBEX to near-mainstream success. Each of his ventures have possessed all of the required elements to break into the top of the Billboard charts, but they could never make it over the ever-eluding mainstream hump.

Our executive Web producer Stacy Peterson has a great story about the first time he saw Dillon Fence live.

“I still have the little red flier lying around somewhere at home …

It was early 1991 and I paid my $5 and went to The Brewery (which is still on Hillsborough Street) to see the band Dillon Fence. I had heard these songs ‘Something For You’ and ‘Daylight’ in 1990 from a demo and was finally going to check them out …

The opening act?

A special acoustic performance from a guy from Virginia named Dave Matthews.

So that’s the story of Dillon Fence, a regional band that very nearly made it in the early 1990s but couldn’t quite get into the mainstream.”

Throughout Dillon Fence’s tenure, the band was signed to Carrboro-based Mammoth Records and consistently sold out regional performances. Even before they exploded with “Hold My Hand,” Hootie & The Blowfish regularly opened for Dillon Fence and incorporated Fence covers into their sets.

Years of nearly constant touring has resulted in Humphreys writing and recording a solo album completely on his own. The songs on Trunk Songs are raw and honest. They are Humphreys at his most vulnerable and at the top of his game.

This weekend you can catch Humphreys with Dillon Fence at the Mammoth Records 21st birthday bash at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro. He will be performing with HOBEX on May 2 at the Brennan Station Concert Series on Hillsborough Street and June 6 for Bandtogether at Lincoln Theatre with Rusted Root, The Rosebuds and Chatham County Line.

Willie Breeding gives an acoustic performance for Music.MyNC and 100.7 the River

Although hailing from Brooklyn, there is nothing northern about Willie Breeding’s music. In fact, the alt-country crooner only lives in Brooklyn, his roots are actually firmly planted in Richmond, Ky.

Before his performance at Nightlight in Chapel Hill on Feb. 4, 2009, Breeding and accompanying guitarist Thomas Bryan Eaton stopped by 100.7 The River for an interview and acoustic performance. Radio host Kitty Kinnin invited Music.MyNC to film the performance and be a part of the event with the rest of the Kat Pack.

Breeding performed songs from the recently released Cheap Vodka Rain, which saw a digital-only release on Jan. 18, as well as from 2006’s EP Grey Skies. If you’re looking for a physical copy of his latest LP, the only place to find it is at Breeding’s shows as he presses limited quantities.

Cheap Vodka Rain was recorded live over a two day session in Brooklyn and produced by Dave Bielanko of Yep Roc Records band Marah.
