Mann’s World Announces ‘Heavy’ Hopscotch Day Party

The Hopscotch day parties continue to roll in. The latest? A rock ‘n’ roll mega show hosted by Karen Mann of Mann’s World.

Mann’s World will take over a newly re-opened King’s on Sept. 11 — going head-to-head with the previously announced Trekky and Churchkey day parties. Though the official start time for the event has not been confirmed, Mann assures things will be wrapped up by 5:30 p.m. in time for the big City Plaza show with The Love Language and Public Enemy.

Anyone familiar with Mann’s World should recognize Karen’s affinity for heavy tunes and stoner metal; so it should come as no surprise that the Mann’s World showcase will feature performances from Black Skies, Caltrop, MAKE and Hog.

“I’m proud to announce that the line up will consist of two of my long-time favorites: Black Skies and Caltrop;  plus two bands that have recently blown me away: MAKE and Hog,” Mann said. “In fact I’m so impressed with MAKE that I put them on this bill without ever having seen them live. They’re that good.”

Anyone planning to follow the Mann’s World party with the U.S. Christmas, Kylessa, Weedeater and In the Year of the Pig show at Berkeley Cafe is in store for one of the sweatiest, heaviest days of the festival.

HNMTF To Headline Churchkey Hopscotch Day Party

Durham-based label Churchkey Records announced the details for its day party during the Hopscotch Music Festival that will soon hit Downtown Raleigh.

Both in celebration of the three-day music fest as well as the label’s three-year anniversary, Churchkey will host a day-party at Tir Na Nog on Sept. 11. Like all the day parties planned during the massive event, the show will be free and features a healthy cross-section of the host label’s roster.

Five bands are set to take the stage throughout the day, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with The Dirty Little Heaters. The Heaters will be followed at 1:30 by Free Electric State, Last Year’s Men at 2:30, The Dry Heathens at 3:30, and finally Hammer No More the Fingers at 4:30.

The label explains that the showcase “will pay tribute to the rock ‘n’ roll that Churchkey was built to promote.”

Along with the tunes, Churchkey will offer free beer courtesy of Triangle Brewing Company.

As far as the other day parties go, Churchkey’s showcase joins the previously announced Trekky day party also on Sept. 11. And on Sept. 9, 307 Knox is planning a day party at King’s … more on that later!

The Rosebuds Unveil Exclusive Tracks In Time For Hopscotch

Posted on: Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Ahead of the release of their highly anticipated new album, The Rosebuds plan to release one archival track each week until the LP drops in early 2011.

To kick things off, the duo have unleashed two tracks through the Hopscotch Web site to mark their Sept. 10 performance on the City Plaza stage alongside Broken Social Scene and Panda Bear.

“We’ve long felt that we were part of an amazing, if somewhat secret artistic community in the Triangle,” The Rosebuds co-founder Kelly Crisp said.

“Now, people everywhere are starting to pay attention to bands we consider neighbors, friends and family. Hopscotch seems like it will bring even more of that attention. Worst case scenario, we’re going to have a blast.”

The tracks — “a sexy, somber cover of the Bee Gees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and the slinking, dark travelogue ‘Secret Life of The Rosebuds in Japan’” — were previously only available on a long out-of-print tour EP. Their release through Hopscotch marks the first time the songs have been widely available.

“Secret Life of The Rosebuds in Japan” was recorded during the home studio sessions that ultimately resulted in the band’s third album, Night of the Furies. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon produced the track, while Daniel Hart (St. Vincent and The Physics of Meaning) added several violin layers. Lee Waters of Portastatic and Work Clothes contributed drums.

“Stayin’ Alive” was recorded during Ivan Howard’s obsessive Bee Gees phase. He was “especially infatuated with how the Gibb brothers handled their drums heading into such memorable choruses. Meanwhile, Crisp noticed the dark-hearted lyrics of ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and wanted to bring them to the surface.”

“Kelly had the idea to record it at a slower tempo to illustrate the heaviness of the lyrics,” Howard said. “This is what we came up with that day.”

The bill features a handful of Trekky artists (Lost in the Trees, Embarrassing Fruits and Butterflies) as well as friends of the label (Midtown Dickens and Sharon Van Etten).

We can also look forward to a “secret supergroup,” Justin Ruggiano. Trekky promises, “More details and surprises to be announced.”

Hopscotch Leak: Richard Buckner, Bowerbirds, Sharon Van Etten, Ryan Gustafson

Things have remained pretty quiet in the Hopscotch camp since the last batch announcement of bands performing at the massive Downtown Raleigh music festival.

But that is perhaps partly due to the fact that the festival lineup has been unveiled, the venues announced and tickets are on sale. It would seem little else needs to be said between now and Sept. 9 — unless you’re anxious for the anticipated festival schedule reveal.

After all, with 120 bands spread over 10 venues and three days, some advance planning may be needed.

That full announcement isn’t expected until July, but a few shows have already begun to leak out. Not the least of which include the 9th Wonder-curated showcase at Lincoln Theatre on Sept. 10, a Future Islands-curated bill on Sept. 9 and of course the City Plaza shows.

But word now comes of another show that will give 9th’s showcase a run for its money on Sept. 10. At The Pour House, fans can expect a bill featuring the Triangle’s own Bowerbirds and Ryan Gustafson as well as Merge recording artist Richard Buckner and Brooklyn’s Sharon Van Etten.

This should be the first of many more leaks to come between now and Sept. 9.

Bowerbirds, Raekwon, Woods Added To Hopscotch Lineup

That second announcement we were expecting on April 12? Yeah, here it is …

The organizers of the Hopscotch Music Festival have announced the second batch of bands to flesh out the expected 120 acts that will sprawl throughout Downtown Raleigh Sept. 9 through 11.

Probably most notably of the second round of artists is the addition of Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon The Chef, who will join Grammy-winning producer 9th Wonder at Lincoln Theatre for a Friday night showcase featuring Actual Proof, Big Remo, Kaze, Rapsody, The Remix Project, Skyzoo and Tyler Woods.

Other hip-hop acts joining that showcase are Justus League’s The Away Team and Justus League brother K-Hill.

Freak folk outfit Woods is also added to the festival roster along with “Chicago noise metallurgists Locrian” and Swedish psychedelic rock band Dungen.

“These new acts reflect the approach we’ve taken from the beginning — we want diverse and noteworthy people to play Hopscotch, whether they’re from here or outside the Triangle,” Hopscotch director Greg Lowenhagen explained in a release. “The artists represent a variety of musical genres and do it as well as anyone. As fans first and organizers second, that was essential to us.”

In addition to the national acts, Hopscotch revealed the addition of a handful of local artists including the internationally acclaimed Bowerbirds, Bellafea, Bright Young Things, In the Year of the Pig and Asheville-based Floating Action.

VIP passes to the three-day festival are sold out and the all-show wristbands are moving quickly.

“So far, the response from the community has been tremendous. The fans, bands, media and just about everyone else we’ve heard from have embraced the idea of Hopscotch,” Lowenhagen said. “We’re even more motivated than before to deliver a high-quality event.”

Broken Social Scene, Public Enemy, Panda Bear Headlining Hopscotch

Posted on: Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Independent Weekly Music Editor and festival Curator Grayson Currin hasn’t been shy over the pass couple of months about letting information slip about the ambitious music festival coming to Downtown Raleigh. In fact, it was almost a game through the Hopscotch Twitter account — teasing followers with tidbits like, “Had a desk-side dance party to Javelin’s new track, ‘Oh! Centra,’ at work … In Sept., we dance to Javelin FOR REAL.”

Still, anticipation sweltered as folks tried to guess who would anchor the highly anticipated three-day music festival.

Any shroud of secrecy leading up to Hopscotch was finally lifted early Wednesday morning with the announcement of more than 100 bands who are slated to play the Downtown Raleigh extravaganza Sept. 9-11.

Of course the biggest names top the bill: Animal Collective’s Panda Bear and Canadian indie rock giants Broken Social Scene on Sept. 10, and legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy appropriately headlining the Sept. 11 festivities. Those shows will be the center of Hopscotch in the heart of Downtown Raleigh at City Plaza with support from The Rosebuds on Friday, and No Age and The Love Language on Saturday.

Surround City Plaza is 110 more bands spread amongst nine venues throughout Downtown Raleigh, including The Berkeley Cafe, Deep South the Bar, Five Star, The Hive at Busy Bee, Kings, Lincoln Theatre, The Pour House, Slim’s and Tir Na Nog. Highlights of those bills include Lucero, Atlas Sound, Tortoise, Bear in Heaven, Pattern Is Movement, Washed Out, Double Dagger, Future Islands and Best Coast.

Filling out about half of the lineup are some of the best acts coming out of the Triangle such as I Was Totally Destroying It, Hammer No More The Fingers, Lonnie Walker, Megafaun, Gray Young, Max Indian, Ryan Gustafson, Luego, Birds of Avalon, American Aquarium, The Kingsbury Manx and Veelee.

In addition to the shows curated by Currin, the festival organizers asked five local bands — Future Islands, The Small Ponds, Juan Huevos, The ExMonkeys and Plague — to curate their own shows as part of a Band’s Bands Series.

Hopscotch tickets go on sale April 1 in four different price structures. Tickets to only the City Plaza shows are $30 for each day; for $45, attendees have all-access to the nine club venues, but not the City Plaza shows; for $85, fans can attend all of the club events as well as the City Plaza shows; and for $120, folks receive skip-the-line access to all shows and a VIP festival kickoff party on Sept. 9.

A second announcement with more bands is expected on April 12. Click to the jump for a listing of the first 103 bands announced for Hopscotch.

Independent Weekly Launching Ambitious 3-Day Music Festival

Posted on: Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
Comments: 1

Perhaps you’ve read somewhere on the Internet that Independent Weekly is launching its own music festival. From initial reports, it looks as if the late-summer festival will rival the likes of South by Southwest and Musicfest NW.

Dubbed Hopscotch, the festival will run from Sept. 9 through 11 and feature 120 bands playing 10 venues throughout Downtown Raleigh.

To say the undertaking is ambitious would be an understatement. But by splitting the bill between local and national acts, Hopscotch already has the strength of the support that comes from the Triangle’s burgeoning music scene. Plus if Indy Week music editor Grayson Currin can nail down just a few of the national acts who have been tossed around, the festival will surely be one not to miss.

That’s about all of the information that is available at this point, and frankly it’s more than I thought would be available at this stage of the game. But a larger-scale announcement is expected on Feb. 18, with the launch of the Hopscotch Web site and a preview of some of the bands.

When the site is launched, tickets will go on sale for between $50 and $120.
