To say 2012 has been a big year for Durham’s Delta Rae would be a gross understatement.

In addition to releasing its debut full-length, Carry the Fire, through Warner Music Group subsidiary Sire Records, and receiving glowing praise from Rolling Stone and Billboard, the sextet made their national television debut Monday night on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

Not surprising, the band decided to introduce themselves to the world with their epic “Bottom of the River,” which saw heavy promotion ahead of Carry the Fire‘s release.

Adding the to fanfare, Rolling Stone selected Delta Rae as one of six artists for its Women Who Rock Campaign, a competition between female-fronted acts for a chance to be on the cover of the magazine.

Warner Bros. VP Seymour Stein signed the band in New York before a show at the Mercury Lounge on Jan. 26, calling them “an important addition to our overall roster.”

“Their music, all original, is a mix of blues, country and gospel with a strong rock and roll influence,” Stein said. “I hate labels, but if forced I would have to call their music ‘Original Americana,’ not unlike what the English are sending over via Mumford & Sons and others.”

Consisting of siblings Brittany, Ian and Eric Hölljes, as well as long-time family friend Elizabeth Hopkins, bassist Grant Emerson and drummer Mike McKee, Delta Rae will celebrate the release of the LP with a “hometown” release show at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on July 27.
