Rapper Petey Pablo was sentenced Monday to 35 months in prison stemming from a charge of possession of stolen firearms after he tried to board a plane with the weapon at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in September 2010.

In March, Petey Pablo, whose real name is Moses Barrett, pleaded guilty to the charge

A spokeswoman for RDU said Petey Pablo was arrested at 6 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2010 by a Transportation Security Administration officer. The officer said a security screening revealed a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol in his carry-on luggage as it passed through an X-ray machine.

At the time, the rapper told his business partner, Vivienne Leigh, that he had someone else’s luggage when he arrived at the airport.

An investigation into the incident by the FBI, ATF, RDU Police and TSA later revealed that Petey Pablo, 37 of Knightdale, was in possession of his own bag, which contained the weapon. Further investigation revealed that the weapon had been stolen during a residential burglary in Gardena, California, in 2005.

The Wake County jail said Petey Pablo was released the same morning of his arrest after posting a $50,000 bond. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of stolen goods and carrying a concealed weapon.

After his release, Petey Pablo boarded another plane at RDU around noon en route to Los Angeles for the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12.

The Greenville native is best known for his singles “Raise Up” and “Freek-a-Leek.” He also appeared on Ciara’s number one single “Goodies,” which was the R&B singer’s answer to Petey Pablo’s “Freek-a-Leek.”
