Motorco welcomes new talent buyer, hopes to attract nationally recognized acts

It was only a year ago when Motorco Music Hall opened its doors with high expectations in Durham.

When it opened, it was no secret that with its position in an up-and-coming area of Durham, a capacity of 500 people and unrivaled sound, Motorco was looking to knock Cat’s Cradle from its throne.

However, the gorgeous venue on the corner of Geer Street and Rigsbee Avenue hasn’t attracted the nationally recognized names that frequent the Cradle. Though, Motorco has seen a strong presence of promising and often acclaimed Triangle-based bands — Bowerbirds, Lost in the Trees and The Love Language, just to name a few.

The man responsible for bringing those acts, Chris Tamplin, has since left Motorco to reignite Local Band Local Beer at Tir Na Nog, as well as to pursue other ventures. Now another prominent local talent buyer has stepped into Chris’ shoes.

Motorco announced that it has brought Glenn Boothe on board to handle the booking at the venue. Glenn, of course, is the longtime owner and talent buyer of Local 506.

“We’re thrilled to have Glenn on our team,” Motorco General Manager Jeremy Roth said. “Glenn will be instrumental in bringing more national talent to our stage. We’re feeling optimistic about 2012.”

With the addition of Boothe, Motorco says it hopes to “present Durham music fans with even more great music in 2012″ through his “national booking connections and local reputation.”

Also added to the Motorco family is Josh Wittman, who was brought on to become a partner.

“In my career I’ve been to countless clubs around the country, so I’m really excited at joining such a wonderful venue as Motorco,” Wittman said. “Glenn and I go back to the college days when he was MD at WXYC and I was pitching him Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet, having a talent buyer as respected as Glenn is a major step forward for Motorco.”

This weekend you can help Motorco celebrate its first year in Durham with a free day party featuring Effingham and The Wigg Report on Saturday. Cracker will headline the nighttime party, with tickets costing $18.50 in advance.
