After 28 years Raleigh institution The Brewery closing its doors

Only four years ago, the legendary Kings Barcade shuttered its doors at 424 S. McDowell Street to make way for a new parking deck. Fortunately, Kings found a new life at 14 W. Martin Street where it has experienced a glorious resurrection.

Now another Raleigh institution will experience a similar fate.

The building where The Brewery is located on Hillsborough Street was purchased by a contractor and is scheduled for demolition Aug. 1, meaning the venue’s final show is Friday, July 29.

Opened in 1983, The Brewery has experienced its ups and downs, but has always been a staple of the Triangle music scene — providing a home for Ryan Adams’ pre-Whiskeytown band Patty Duke Syndrome, as well as the backdrop for the 1996 indie flick Bandwagon, directed by former The Connells drummer John Schultz.

“The closing is due to no fault of The Brewery,” owner Tom Taylor explained in a note to fans. “We were informed of this only yesterday [July 22]“

While it is uncertain whether we will see The Brewery’s resurrection ala Kings, Taylor says the option shouldn’t be ruled out.

“This site will remain up, as well as the web page at www.brewerync.com,” Taylor wrote. “Don’t forget about us. We may just be back one day.”

To celebrate its life, The Brewery will open its doors Wednesday, July 27 for the sole purpose of hanging out with friends and talking “about how much this sucks.”

On July 29, The Brewery will host its final show when Embracing Goodbye takes the stage along with Current, Set Apart, A Kiss For Jersey, The Demonstration and Sent By Raven. Somewhat fittingly, the show will also serve as Embracing Goodbye’s last as it celebrates six years together.
