The Love Language is a band who can easily sell out Local 506. Even packing Cat’s Cradle isn’t much of a task for this revered five piece.

But for four days in May, The Love Language pushed the physical limits of Slim’s — the beloved, 99-capacity venue in Downtown Raleigh.

Anchored by the charismatic, hook-writing machine that is Stuart McLamb, The Love Language no doubt knew they’d sell out all four nights at Slim’s, giving back to a City that embraced them from the very beginning.

While Greenville and Wilmington can share that sentiment, it’s Raleigh that The Love Language calls home. And Tuesday night, as “Gray Court” blasted from 227 South Wilmington Street , echoing clearly along Fayetteville Street, Raleigh belonged to The Love Language.

Fittingly, Night 1 of the four-night residency was a track-by-track performance of McLamb’s debut, self-titled album — the album that captivated North Carolina and caught the attention of Merge Records.

Of course fan favorites “Lalita,” “Sparxxx” and “Manteo,” pumped the crowd, but it was the band’s cover of T. Rex’s “Cosmic Dancer” that blew the roof off Slim’s.

Joined by Left Outlet‘s resident shredder Drew Smith and drummer Clay Bravo, the cover re-energized the crowd for an encore set that included “Blue Angel,” “Heart to Tell” and “Brittany’s Back” from the The Love Language’s sophomore LP, Libraries.

A perfect ending to Night 1 of this residency, giving fans a taste of what was in order for Night 2.
