Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl falls in love with boy. Boy and girl start a band. Boy marries girl.
SetlistA Winter Wedding |
Hold up. Rewind. They started a band? It’s not totally unheard of — see: The White Stripes, Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Sonny & Cher …
OK, this isn’t going so well, let’s start over. Bowerbirds, Wings, Arcade Fire, Plastic Ono Band, Sonic Youth.
That’s better.
It’s no secret that — well — the secret to a successful band is chemistry. If all of the parts don’t work, then the machine is destined to breakdown.
For one of Raleigh’s newest duos, all of the parts move in perpetual bliss, which began almost the instance Mark Tillman met Sarah Peters.
“She always says the moment I fell in love with her — quote, unquote — was when she was singing a song and playing a guitar, and I walked in the room on her first visit to North Carolina,” Mark said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Her voice, her guitar playing … she’s awesome.’ And that’s when it clicked for me.”
As Sarah says, “from there it was music history and beyond.”
Soon after Sarah moved to Raleigh from her native Toronto, the duo began playing small coffee shops under the name Wind & Willow; even establishing a residency of sorts at Global Village on Hillsborough Street.
While the band’s name has its obvious roots with Kenneth Grahame’s children’s novel The Wind in the Willows, Sarah says Mark sold her on a more romantic back story.
“He coerced me by saying that it could represent the way that he proposed to me,” Sarah said. “He proposed to me under my favorite tree in a park in Toronto called High Park, and it was a willow tree. So it actually does have significance, and it was kind of windy the night of. My heart was in it from there.”
Like Crystal Bright & The Silver Hands, whom Music.MyNC previously hosted on Sessions at Studio B, part of the allure of Wind & Willow is the diverse instrumentation both Sarah and Mark bring to the table. Sarah originally only played guitar and piano, but her musical vocabulary expanded on the encouragement of Mark’s breadth of knowledge.
“He was playing a hammered dulcimer at this event and I was like, ‘What’s that instrument? That guy’s so interesting, and he plays so many different interesting instruments!’” Sarah said, emphatically.
Mark added, “I kind of had a kick when I was probably in high school. Hammered dulcimer was the first ‘eclectic’ instrument that I wanted to learn, so I taught myself and that kind of moved on to other instruments.”
Even one of the more famously difficult instruments to play worked its way into Mark’s repertoire.
“[The sitar] is pretty hard to play. You definitely have to get lessons from a guru, a master.”
Mark joked, “The Beatles.”
“He’s like a music addict, pretty much,” Sarah said. “He’s always looking for a new instrument to buy; a new, interesting, weird instrument”
