Vaudeville, circus music, minstrel … it’s tough to pin down exactly what Greensboro’s Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands is, but it’s easy to see Bright’s eclectic musical background is at the forefront of the band’s truly unique tunes.

“It’s kind of a cross between Winger and The Kinks,” multi-instrumentalist Taylor Bays joked.
But Bays isn’t far off. In fact, Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands shares some similarities with The Kinks’ notoriously theatrical Preservation albums.
“A bunch of people have told us that it’s a mix between Kate Bush, Dresden Dolls, Tom Waits, French, European – it’s kind of all over the place,” Bright explained. “My background is in ethnomusicology from Florida State, and I just like playing a bunch of different instruments. So whatever happens, happens.”
As bassist Charles Kurtz aptly describes it: “Nerd music.”
Getting to that point has been a familiar tale to many in the current, downtrodden economy.
Bright found herself a laid off teacher looking for a new career. As a result, she turned to her love of music, which subsequently blossomed into The Silver Hands – which shares its name with the German fairytale “The Girl with Silver Hands.”
Only a year later, the band has released its debut album and has plans to re-enter the studio to record its follow-up in 2011.
“The new album is going to have a lot more piano-based music on it,” Bright said. “The songs have definitely become more sophisticated.”
That sophistication has even garnered the attention of the North Carolina Symphony, who has invited Bright along with Silver Hands guitarist Diego Diaz to perform with them New Years Eve. The pair will take the stage a Meymandi Concert Hall to perform their song “Toy Hammer,” which the symphony arranged after Bright won a Triangle talent contest.
“We played an original song, and they liked it,” Bright explained of the opportunity. “I left them a CD, they picked ‘Toy Hammer,’ and they did an arrangement of it. It’ll be a small orchestra, not the whole symphony.”
