A year and a half after the release of the acclaimed Not For Everyone, Just For You, North Elementary is back on a new label and with a new album.

“A lot of it had to do with the success of Not For Everyone, Just For You,” frontman John Harrison explained. “People seemed to be in to that record and I think that opened up a couple doors a lot quicker for this record.”
Released through 307 Knox Records, Southern Rescue Trails was recorded in 2009, and though it didn’t see the light of day until October 2010, Harrison had hoped to get the album out sooner.
“We started recording in September of 2009, was mixed by December and I was actually wanting to get it out in the spring but the situation didn’t allow us to put it out until the fall,” Harrison said.
The delay actually turned out to be a gift as it allowed the band the opportunity to release the album on various mediums — including vinyl and the rarely seen cassette.
With his 7-inch Weeble Wobble Sound Series as well as a split 7 with Atlanta’s Pistolero, Harrison is no stranger to the vinyl medium, though Southern Rescue Trails was the first time North Elementary has had the opportunity press a full length on wax.
“We’ve released 7 inches, but to have a full length on vinyl was really cool,” Harrison said. “Most of the records I buy from bands, if they have a vinyl release that’s what I tend to buy.”
As far as the cassette goes, it’s more for nostalgia than anything.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but I see a lot more bands releasing things on tape — I’ve bought tapes from bands I’ve seen at Nightlight and other clubs,” Harrison explained. “If you’re already going to have your record available on iTunes or something digitally where it costs you next to nothing, the next cheapest medium is probably tapes.”
“I grew up buying tapes, so I think it’s cool to make one.”
Regardless of the medium Southern Rescue Trails stands as yet another solid addition to NorthE’s catalog, once again anchored by Harrison’s soulful songwriting.
“I enjoy writing songs; even if I didn’t have the good fortune of having a band, I’d be writing songs.”
