After a stunning debut with 2009′s Firmament, Gray Young returns with a second chapter, staysail, released Oct. 23 through 307 Knox Records.

Considering Firmament secured Gray Young’s place in the Triangle music scene’s storied history, it’s almost unfathomable to consider following it with an album that could potentially top its predecessor. While some may argue they fell short of their 2009 effort, staysail stands as a testament to the band’s immense talent and their growth as musicians.
“In terms of comparing the two albums, I don’t think we’ve thought too much about it,” frontman Chas McKeown explained. “Subconsciously I think we wanted to do something different — we didn’t want to repeat ourselves.”
“We’ve become better at being a band, but as far as what we want to do with that, I feel like we still don’t know. And I think that’s actually a good thing because it keeps me interested — it keeps us interested — because we don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t want to get tied to anything like, ‘This is what we do and we know how to do it.’”
For staysail, Gray Young went to Mebane to record at Duck Kee Studio with producer Jerry Kee — a familiar setting considering the band worked with Key on Firmament.
“There were definitely things we did know when we went in and we’d figure them out in the studio,” McKeown said of the recording of the album. “Jerry’s place allows us to do that; you’re in his house so you don’t feel like you’re in this sterile studio where every second is ticking off the clock.”
Unlike staysail’s predecessors, the band is making the album available on vinyl in addition to the traditional CD and MP3 formats. Much like numerous other bands, Gray Young recognizes the warmth provided by the medium – in both the sound and physical delivery.
“Vinyl, personally, is a very exciting thing right now; it’s sort of an old-meets-new technology,” McKeown said. “I love vinyl and I love the idea of having a CD, and I think the future is going to be — at least I hope the future is going to be — vinyl with a digital download inside.
“[The staysail] vinyl has one less song, we had to take it off for time. But with the digital download you get that song as well. The sequencing worked out really nice so that right in the middle where we needed to cut it on the record the first song was already in place.”
