Fayetteville Venue Sells Tickets To Non-Concert

A concert venue in Fayetteville is receiving heat from fans after the venue began selling tickets for a concert that the band billed to headline said is not going to happen.

The controversy began early this month when The Rock Shop created a Facebook event page for an Avenged Sevenfold concert on Jan. 22. The problem was that the band itself had not yet confirmed the show.

But in the modern Internet age, venues and even media jumping the gun on concert announcements is no new story. Music.MyNC was even guilty of this when we reported that Los Angeles-based trio Autolux would perform at the Duke Coffeehouse with Sleepy Sun. Touring site Pollstar initially listed the two bands as playing together at Duke University, but Autolux was never intended to be on the bill.

In regard to the Avenged Sevenfold concert, the situation manifested further when the venue announced on Nov. 5 that tickets for the concert would go on sale “the middle of next week. We are awaiting an official announcement from the band that tickets are on sale before they go on sale to the general public.”

The official announcement never came — at least on the band’s website — yet three days later tickets went on sale through Triangle-based e-ticket seller Etix for $40.

“AVENGED SEVENFOLD tickets are now available online for their January 22 appearance at The Rock Shop Music Hall!,” the venue Tweeted to followers on Monday.

Two hours later the venue Tweeted, “AVENGED SEVENFOLD tickets have not sold out…more should be online tomorrow morning.”

And then at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the venue again addressed the show, “AVENGED SEVENFOLD tickets are back on sale right now. We had a rush last night that bottled up the ticketing…”

However, around 6 p.m. Avenged Sevenfold issued a statement to fans asserting that the Jan. 22 show was not going to happen.

“Please be aware that Avenged Sevenfold is not performing on 1/22/11 in Fayetteville, N.C. Anyone selling tickets is a fraud,” the band said in the statement.

A representative with the band says the band was never contacted by anyone from The Rock Shop and therefore negotiations for the Jan. 22 concert never even began. He says he believes that someone with The Rock Shop was misinformed and started the ball rolling on the promotion of a concert that was never set in stone.

The band says they are trying to figure out where the communication break down occurred — who with the band the concert promoter contacted and who with the promoter contacted the band.

Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night, The Rock Shop issued a statement confirming the miscommunication and explaining that they are refunding those who purchased tickets for the Jan. 22 concert.

“The Rock Shop Music Hall would like like to apologize for anybody that bought Avenged Sevenfold tickets for Janurary 22,” the venue said in a statement. “Unfortunately, there was a booking miscommunication and they will be playing Boston on that date. All tickets are in the process of being refunded. Thanks for your understanding and support.”
