We’re not going to try to tell you which shows you should check out this weekend at Hopscotch. We’ll leave Triangle Music, Mann’s World, Trekky Records, Indy Week and New Raleigh to handle that task.
However, we are proud to say that a significant number of bands who have performed a set on Session at Studio B will take the stage throughout the festival. So rather than dictate your weekend, we’ll offer a glimpse at some of the band’s you may see while navigating venue to venue.

Kicking off Hopscotch earlier this afternoon was the Knox with an X Day Party at the newly reopened Kings Barcade. The show was heavy on 307 Knox talent including Gray Young, Tea and Tempests, Humble Tripe, Midtown Dickens, Birds & Arrows and Sessions at Studio B alum North Elementary. NorthE is gearing up for the release of Southern Rescue Trails through 307 Knox, but in July 2009 he stopped in to promote his 2009 album Not For Everyone, Just For You.
Hammer No More The Fingers, who appeared on Sessions at Studio B in April ahead of the release on their acclaimed album Looking For Bruce, performs tonight at The Hive above Busy Bee at 12:30 a.m. with Old Bricks, Goner and Pattern Is Movement.
We were fortunate enough to host Greenville expats Future Islands the day their sophomore LP, In Evening Air, was released by Thrill Jockey Records. Tonight, the band is hosting EAR PWR, Pictureplane, Double Dagger and Javelin at Berkeley Café. Future Islands is scheduled to perform at 12:30 a.m.
Beginning with the day parties, The Beast, who appeared in July ahead of the release of their LP Silence Fiction, performs at the Troika Music Festival Day Party at Kings with The Pneurotics and Bellafea. The group is scheduled to take the stage at 4 p.m.
Also going on Friday is a last minute addition to the day party schedule. The show is at 3 p.m. at Remedy Diner on Hargett Street. Studio B alums Schooner and Lonnie Walker will perform, along with Motor Skills and Juan Huevos.
Bowerbirds, who released one of the most acclaimed local albums of 2009, performs at 11:30 p.m. at The Pour House with Ryan Gustafson, Sharon Van Etten and Richard Buckner. The band performed on Session at Studio B in July 2009 just before the release of Upper Air and a cross-country tour with Megafaun.
Hosting K-Hill was huge for Sessions at Studio B for a couple of reasons. For one, he was the first hip-hop artist to appear on the program; second, we had been an admirer of his since his guest spot on 9th Wonder’s Dream Merchant, Vol. 1 in 2005. Hill performs Friday at Lincoln Theatre for a hip-hop night hosted by 9th and featuring a performance from Wu-Tang’s Raekwon among many others.
Schooner released an incredible EP with Duck Kee Sessions, and testament to the caliber of person frontman Reid Johnson is, he donated all proceeds to a charity benefiting The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center. The band is scheduled to take the stage around 11 p.m. at Tir Na Nog with Bellafea, Kingsbury Manx and The War On Drugs.
To say we were blown away by Taped-Together Stories would be a drastic understatement. Yet a few months after that album’s release, frontman Patrick Phelan was already working on the album’s follow-up and his band, Luego, appeared on Sessions at Studio B. Along with Monologue Bombs, Erin McKeown, Caitlin Cary’s Small Ponds and Tres Chicas, Luego will perform at Deep South at a show curated by Cary herself. Luego is scheduled to take the stage at 10 p.m.
There’s something about Americans in France that really pumps us up — perhaps their vintage, anarchic punk sensibility. It’s the reason why we asked the band to perform at our Cherry Bounce showcase in 2009, as well as invited the band to perform on Sessions at Studio B in January of this year. The band will take the stage at The Hive above Busy Bee around 9:30 p.m. with Veelee, Active Child and Mountains.
I’m not sure how many e-mails it took before we finally scored a performance from Spider Bags frontman Dan McGee. The result was well worth the wait as he put on one of our most memorable shows; rather than running his vocals direct to our board, Dan asked to run vocals through a guitar amp that was mic’d. Friday night, Spider Bags will take the stage at Slim’s around 10 p.m. with Followed By Static, The Golden Boys and Harlem.
While we didn’t have the complete The Rosebuds experience, we were fortunate enough to host Ivan Howard for our Have a Holly Raleigh KIDSmas Christmas special that we produced with Sir Walter Records. Ivan came in solo to perform “I Hear (Click, Click, Click)” the ‘Buds track from the 2009 benefit compilation. The Rosebuds will open an incredible City Plaza show Friday night featuring Animal Collective’s own Panda Bear and indie rock supergroup Broken Social Scene.
When The White Cascade appeared on Sessions at Studio B in March, the band didn’t have a single release under its belt, but in the works was an EP full of beautiful, dense textures and rich colors. The band is scheduled to share that Saturday afternoon at Humble Pie for the A Hazy Morning Wake-Up Day Party with Glissade.
Another band finding its way to the day parties is Free Electric State, who performed on Sessions in April ahead of the release of its debut full length, Caress. The band will perform at one our most anticipated day parties, the Churchkey III Day Party at Tir Na Nog with Lurch, Hammer No More The Fingers, Last Year’s Men and The Dry Heathens.
The Old Ceremony is about to release the follow-up to 2009′s Walk On Thin Air, and in anticipation will perform tonight (Thursday) on Sessions at Studio B. But in February 2009, we had the pleasure of hosting TOC for the first time just ahead of the release of Walk. TOC will be one of many bands performing at Saturday afternoon’s Local Time Day Party outside Raleigh Times. The band will be joined by The Flute Flies (Reid Johnson of Schooner, Ivan Howard of The Rosebuds and producer Zeno Gill), NAPS, The Loners, Maple Stave, Red Collar and Des Ark.
Behind the release of 2009′s Community/Exploitation, Embarrassing Fruits appeared on Sessions in October of that year. The band performs at the Trekky Records Day Party at The Pour House just a few doors down from the Churchkey day party. Joining the band are fellow Trekky artists Butterflies and Lost in the Trees, as well as Sharon Van Etten and Midtown Dickens.
Lost in the Trees has had an absolutely huge year, what with signing to ANTI- in March, so we were thrilled when the band accepted our invitation to perform on Sessions at Studio B in July. The band will join the incredible Trekky-centric lineup at The Pour House Saturday for the Trekky Records Day Party.
Dexter Romweber is certainly a local legend, and with an endorsement from Jack White, he’s a national icon as well. So hosting the Dex Romweber Duo in February 2009 was intimidating to say the least. Dex and his sister Sara came in, banged out three tacks from 2009′s Ruins of Berlin, and split for an in-store at Schoolkids. It was a whirlwind that left us asking, “Did that really happen?” The Dex Romweber Duo performs Saturday at Slim’s with Bright Young Things, Floating Action and Pontiak. The band is scheduled to take the stage at 10 p.m.
Saturday night at Deep South might as well be dubbed “Sessions at Studio B’s Greatest Hits.” The lineup literally features three of our favorite in-studio performances. Taking the stage first at 9:30 p.m. is I Was Totally Destroying It. Following at 10:30 p.m. is one our all-time favorites, Lonnie Walker, and finally hip-hop crew Kooley High at 12:30 a.m. Nestled between Lonnie Walker and Kooley is Toronto’s First Rate People.
The grand finale of Hopscotch is Public Enemy Saturday night at City Plaza. This should be the be-all end-all performance of the three-day festival, but before the legendary hip-hop group can take the stage, they will be preceded by No Age and recent Merge Records signees The Love Language. Before frontman Stuart McLamb and his crew had the opportunity to explode into the national spotlight, Stu joined us for a solo, campfire-style performance in support of his eponymous debut. We look forward to hosting him again along with his full band in the near future.
Hopscotch may be over, but that doesn’t mean the party has to stop. Slim’s will host a Hopscotch Hangover post-party Sunday afternoon with Chip Robinson & The Heavy Beat Outfit, The Spring Collection and Studio B alum Brett Harris. The party starts at noon and Brett Harris, who performed on Sessions in April, is scheduled to open the show.
