Music fans headed to Moore Square on Saturday for the Got to be N.C. Ag Jam, which featured North Carolina products and free music. But it might be the last big concert there for a while.

Deep South Entertainment, which produces the event, said Raleigh Downtown Live, a free concert series in Moore Square that it also produced, has run its course.

“Downtown Live was created because what was needed was the bringing of population downtown for entertainment,” said Dave Rose, co-owner of Deep South Entertainment. “The new amphitheater is filling that need right now.”

Rose said a similar series could be developed for the new amphitheater, which opened this month across from the Raleigh Convention Center.

Rose said the planned redesign of Moore Square is also a factor.

“Moore Square, in my opinion, needs to become more of a city park and something that can handle events, but maybe not big concerts,” he said.

Rose said Moore Square could still host concerts, they just wouldn’t be as large or as often as in the past.

Music fans at the Ag Jam on Saturday said they were disappointed to hear the Raleigh Downtown Live concert series wasn’t coming back.

“This entire place would be packed,” said Jennifer Logan, who said she always looked forward to the free concerts.

Last year the series attracted names like Charlie Daniels and Joan Jett.

Mario Longo, who owns Vic’s Italian Restaurant in nearby City Market, said concert-goers would always stop at his restaurant before walking across the street to Moore Square.

“Without these things, I think we’re going to be in bad shape,” he said.

Good riddance. Waste of what could’ve been a good event. Instead, Deep South brought in has-beens, one-hit-wonders, and never-beens.

  2. mark Says:

agreed, will. deep south is a joke and deserves to be out of business.

  3. jared Says:

Mark and Will need to get their money together and show Deep South how it should be done. The Moore’s Square concerts were a decent way to spend a relaxing Saturday with no entry fee.

  4. Lauren Says:

Bring back downtown raleigh live. You are right the new amphitheater is bring people to downtown but downtown raleigh live brings life.

  5. Jacob Says:

If Downtown Live brought people to the area, why would you stop just because there is something new. If you keep it going, people will continue to come to both places. More venues=More people
