But that’s exactly what frontman Dan McGee and bassist Gregg Levy have pulled off along with North Carolina native and drummer Rock Forbes.
“I’ve always kind of identified with folk-blues. Folk-blues was the first thing that I ever heard on the radio and thought, ‘Holy crap, that is amazing,’” McGee explained. “I was really tuned in to that at an early age, and it was through that that I found rock ‘n’ roll and punk. But my heart was always more with stuff that’s got its foot in folk.”
Now calling Carrboro home, Spider Bags have further honed their whiskey soaked, highway songs all-the-while bettering themselves through living amongst southern charm.
“I’ve been able to be introspective and feel this space that’s mine alone. It’s done wonders,” McGee told Independent Weekly in September 2009. “I’m one hundred times healthier than I ever was living up there.”
With two full lengths and several 7″ releases already to their name, Spider Bags is gearing up for the next chapter with another 7″, Take It Easy Tonite, coming out later this summer through Churchkey Records.
“With [Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World], I spent over a year trying to make the best record I could possibly make,” McGee said. “Then I realized I could also make the best two songs I could possibly make, and that’s a lot quicker. … Doing the singles you can say, ‘These are the best songs we are playing right now, let’s record them and put them out.’”
