Folks may know and remember him as one of the top-10 finalists on the eighth season of American Idol; but the fact is, Chapel Hill native Anoop Desai is looking to his grassroots fan base for the release of his debut album, All Is Fair.
SetlistMy Name |
“When this album and this tour become successful, it’s not going to be because there were millions and millions and millions of dollars behind it,” Desai explained. “It will be on the strength of my fans, the strength of my band and the strength of the music.”
The album is set to be released May 4, with the release preceded by the single “My Name Is.” And rather than looking to that major label contract awarded to the season’s American Idol winner, Desai has maintained a completely hands-on approach to recording his long-awaited debut.
“It keeps you honest in terms of songwriting … basically what you put down is you,” Desai explained. “A lot of artists when they become really big, what they put down is their voice — it’s their face — but they’re not really in the thick of it. For me, right now, it’s a daily process — it’s fun, it’s a hobby, it’s a job, it’s a business. I have to be held accountable with my fans and make them happy; I have to make myself happy.”
Although All Is Fair is technically labeled an EP, the album is actually eight tracks and could easily be considered a full length. Regardless, Desai has already returned to the studio to begin work on the album’s follow-up.
“I like to have a lot vocal harmony in whatever I do,” Desai said “We’re already writing for the next album, and I’m really looking to expand that idea.”

Anoop, I hope you don’t mind having a 64 year old new fan. Can hardly wait to play your new album while traveling in my motorhome. I also plan to buy for my sisters so they can enjoy great music from NC.

Been a fan of Anoop since his “So you study BBQ” in flip flops audition on AI. Love the new album but much prefer this live version of ‘Senses’ with the hip hop scratching, it makes the song bounce and brings the retro Stevie Wonder keyboard riff current. Please Anoop, release a remix version of Senses with the dj, and produce a live version video of it for youtube and dare I say ..TV. Kudos Anoop, fantastic debut album!
