North Carolina natives The Avett Brothers along with Triangle expat Justin Vernon recently recorded tracks for a John Prine tribute album due out this summer.
Oh Boy Records will release Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine June 22. The album features contribution from My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show, Deer Tick and Drive-By Truckers, as well as Merge recording artists Lambchop and Conor Oberst.
The Avett Brothers recorded a version of Prine’s 1971 song “Spanish Pipedream,” while Vernon takes on the 1978 track “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow).”
“That Prine’s perspective flourishes so vividly in these modern recastings is testament to not only the sheer power of his songs, but to the subtly defiant undercurrent that runs throughout Prine’s oeuvre,” a press release reads.
Prine will perform at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre May 7 along with Old Crow Medicine Show.
