For the past several months it has been assumed that Live Nation would head up the booking of Raleigh’s new Downtown Amphitheatre, with the concert promoter expected to book between 15 and 20 acts each year.

Today, the Raleigh City Council unanimously approved that agreement, establishing Live Nation as the venue’s primary booking agency through 2014.

“Under the agreement between the City and Live Nation, Live Nation will schedule 15 to 20 concerts and comedy performances a year at the amphitheatre through Dec. 31, 2014,” a press release from the City explains.

“Live Nation, the largest live entertainment company in the world, will be responsible for promoting and marketing the events, and making sure the events comply with City curfews and noise level standards set for the amphitheatre.”

The first planned Live Nation event will be Backstreet Boys on June 6; tickets for that go on sale April 23. To date, Live Nation has confirmed six concert dates with more on their way.

“The Live Nation booking of Backstreet Boys is largely based on routing circumstances of when they’ll be in the area that lined up with when the venue will be ready,” Taylor Traversari with the Raleigh Amphitheatre and Convention Center said. “We do however, plan on having a public opening prior to this date. Details will be announced at a later time.”

On July 23, the amphitheatre will host the Honda Civic Tour with Paramore, Tegan and Sara, New Found Glory, and Kadawatha; then on July 28, the Legalize It Tour will make at stop with Slightly Stoopid, Cypress Hill and Collie Buddz; Aug. 10, O.A.R. will come to the outdoor venue along with Citizen Cope; Aug. 25 will bring Sound Tribe Sector 9; and on Sept. 17, Black Crowes will bring its “Say Goodnight To The Bad Guys” tour to the amphitheatre.

Another announcement on its way is Heart — that date probably being nestled sometime between Aug. 12 and 17. David Menconi over at the N&O’s On The Beat blog also reports the Carnival of Madness tour with Chevelle, Sevendust, 10 Years, Shinedown and Puddle Of Mudd will hit the venue on July 25.

“We know it’s probably too early for the public to make a judgment on our schedule, but we feel that the public will be pleasantly surprised with the final summer schedule in Downtown Raleigh,” Traversari explained.

The City expects the Downtown Amphitheatre to attract up to 225,000 visitors annually, with net proceeds from all events at the venue projected to be approximately $500,000 per year for the first five years.
