Triangle expat Tift Merritt revealed the details behind See You On The Moon, the follow-up to her acclaimed 2008 album Another Country.
The album is set to be released June 1 through Fantasy Records. It was recorded at Overdub Lane in Durham with producer Tucker Martine, and features contributions from My Morning Jacket’s Jim James on the track “Feel Of The World.”
“I wanted to make a really direct record,” Merritt said in a release. “I wanted to take everything to a place that was less labored, of more depth. Open space, real strength. There was a certain feeling of inevitability about it. Like I found these songs whole.”
Merritt worked with her long-time band, including her husband and band co-founder Zeke Hutchins. For the record, she brought the band to her native North Carolina.
“It made a lot of sense to take this record back to North Carolina,” Merritt said. “Build a fort in our own backyard.”
In a January 2010 post, News & Observer’s David Menconi noted the See You On The Moon is not as “overtly conceptual” as Another Country, though it does find Merritt exploring other “thematic elements.”
“The story is more in the music this time,” Merritt told Menconi. “Jay [Brown] and Zeke [Hutchins] and I all had grandmothers die last summer … Those kinds of ties that bind each other and our families all made their way in there.”
Every week leading up to the album’s release, Merritt will post a new track to stream on her Web site. The first cut is the opening track from the album, “Mixtape.”
