For nearly 10 years, Weekend Excursion was the preeminent college rock band in the Triangle. Between 1994 and ’02, the band shared the stage with the likes of Barenaked Ladies, Melissa Etheridge and Vertical Horizon; and even though the band — for the most part — called it quits in 2004, they continue to pack venues with one-off performances.

In addition to occasionally reuniting with his W.E. counterparts, frontman Sam Fisher says he has been teetering on the edge of retirement, but still keeps his foot in the door with several projects, including the release of his debut solo LP, People Living, in 2006 and work with the R&B group Mercury Blue.
Fisher’s most recent endeavor is with Charles Newkirk, a fellow member of Mercury Blue, and former Brooks Wood Band drummer Danny Shampine. Originally dubbed Caruso, the band soon found means to switch its name to simply “Sam Fisher” after discovering that another Triangle band had reserved the name Caruso.
Together, the band released The Lucas Gambit EP under the Caruso moniker, and with the help of sisters Annette Newkirk and Runnette Ethridge, will remix the album for a re-release with the “Sam Fisher” branding.
Currently Fisher is also finishing up work on a trip-hop project with Wake Forest-via-Nashville-based Fleau, as well as a worship album for his church.
