A Rooster for the Masses and The Design are among the latest local bands to become victims of a string of burglaries at the same facility off Capital Blvd. near The Cotton Mill.

“Put us on the list of bands that have had our stuff stolen at the Joyner building downtown,” A Rooster for the Masses said on its ReverbNation page. “What is wrong with people?”

Guitarist Wes Gillespie commented on the New Raleigh blog that A Rooster for the Masses were among six or seven bands who were “hit” in this recent burglary.

“The thieves were arrogant enough to leave us a calling card as well,” Gillespie wrote. “They obviously have a van or covered truck to haul a lot of gear away.”

This recent break-in comes after Annuals lost about $5,800 in gear over the holidays.

Annuals bassist Mike Robinson explained that despite the frequent break-ins, the facility’s management company, Joyner Realty, refuses to install security cameras. Joyner told NBC-17 that the company plans to install security keypads, but have yet to follow through with the plan.

In addition to Annuals, The Design and A Rooster for the Masses, Double Negative was also burglarized at the same facility in December 2009 as well as The Johnnies and the Pete Wilson band.

Pete Wilson and The Johnnies bassist Brandon Walton said that five other rooms were burglarized the same night they were hit.

“We have had that room for 10 years but decided to move out when we had to fix our own door,” Walton explained. ” All the rest were fixed except ours!”

“These [break-ins] were starting to happen more when [Joyner Realty] started putting those signs on Capital advertising Band Rooms,” Walton continued. “It was like saying, ‘Please rob my tenants.’”

A Rooster for the Masses is scheduled to perform at The Pour House Music Hall on Feb. 4, with Chatham County Line and Filthybird for a Haiti relief benefit.

***NOTE*** New Raleigh has a list of gear stolen from A Rooster for the Masses. Anyone with information about these burglaries is encouraged to contact the Raleigh Police Department at (919) 996-3555, or CrimeStoppers at (919) 834-HELP.

  1. Kat Whitaker Says:

Yeah, I can’t believe this happened AGAIN! The Design has always been lucky enough to be on the road with all of our equipment when stuff like this has happened in the past, but not this time. There aren’t that many places for bands to practice in Raleigh, and it’s a shame that we’ve had to deal with this security issue several times. Once was enough.
