On Chia-Yu Hsu‘s MP3-player, you’ll find Alicia Keys mixed with the classics. Chia-Yu, who just earned her Ph.D. from Duke University this semester, grew up in Taiwan learning that classical music was an important part of life.
“My mother loves music a lot, [but] she couldn’t afford to study music,” Chia-Yu said. “When she realized I had an interest in music, she was taking me to all the concerts.”
Chia-Yu started playing the piano at age 5 and would later start composing music. A pianist recorded her piece called “Among Gardens” and later released it commercially.
“Ultimately — no matter what kind of music you play or compose — as long as you speak from your heart, your music will resonate with the audience and remain relevant,” she said.
In November, she competed with composers from around the world in the Dilettante Digital Composer-in-Residence competition and earned a spot as a finalist with her composition “Zhi.”
She also just finished her dissertation and will graduate in a couple days. She hopes to now begin a college teaching career. But out of her loves, one stands out.
“I like orchestra. It’s just like making recipes,” she said.
She just recently received a recording grant to produce her own album. And last October, her choral work filled Carnegie Hall.
“It’s so thrilling to see your work be performed in this prestigious venue and also with all the good performers,” she said. “I just feel that I am the luckiest person in the world to have this opportunity.”
