Just two days before the band’s big performance at First Night Raleigh, local indie rock sextet Annuals discovered that its practice space had been burglarized over the holidays.
Bassist Mike Robinson says between two guitars, two keyboards, microphones and a “fancy vocal pedal,” the band lost about $5,880 in gear.
Robinson explained that the incident happened at its Downtown Raleigh practice space “sometime over Christmas” when all of the band members were out of town.
“[We] hadn’t been by the space in like a week or so,” Robinson said.
“It was a wide time frame when it could have happened,” Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said. “Sometime between Dec. 15 and Dec. 29.”
Guitarist Kenny Florence says the band is missing a “Tiger’s Eye Wood Finish Les Paul guitar; Brown/Red Taylor Electric guitar; Korg Triton LE keyboard with green, purple and yellow tape stuck to it in various places; MicroKorg Synthesizer; vocal effects pedal; two Shure SM57 microphones; and Shure SM58 microphone.”
With the band’s New Year’s Eve performance just a day away, Robinson says Annuals is relying on fellow musicians to help fill the gaps in its gear.
“We are borrowing stuff from various friends,” Robinson said. “So I think we’ll be all right practicing with borrowed gear today. The keyboard settings will be the trickiest thing.”
Annuals is scheduled to headline the First Night Raleigh festivities leading up to the Acorn drop at midnight in City Plaza on Dec. 31. The band also has a local show coming up on Feb. 19 with Gray Young at The Pour House Music Hall.
“We’re actually familiar with the gear because we’ve used it in the past, so we’re going to be fine,” Robinson said. “The show tonight will be great; it’s not going to mess anything up at all. We’re going to do what we always do, and it’s going to be awesome.”
In March, the band will release the follow-up to its 2008 full-length Such Fun. The Sweet Sister EP will see a release March 30 through California-based Banter Records.
“Sweet Sister encompasses the pure energy that Annuals are known for: the quirky experimentalism, the intrinsic pop sensibility, the impeccable production and the boundless independent spirit,” the label explains. “It is electrifyingly alive, and promises to be yet another highlight in this young band’s successful and blossoming career.”

Was this the same practice space where Double Negative’s stuff was stolen?

I urge my fellow musicians to keep a close eye on craiglist and the local dealers. Apparently the burglars hit up several practice spaces in the same vicinity.
