It was truly an act of brotherhood that was showcased Monday night at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre when four acts came together over a common love of Appalachian music.

The Big Surprise Tour featured a cross-section of a style of music that has been flourishing since the turn of the 20th century, but has just now begun to find a new following from a younger generation. Folks like The Felice Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show are paving the way for new interpretations of this ol’ time music, while artists like Justin Townes Earle and Gillian Welch keep the genre grounded in its Americana roots.

The show opened with the Big Surprise Band — a massive 15-member jam collaboration — giving the audience just a small taste of what to expect for the evening. Indeed, as each band broke away, members of others would come in and out of sets to lend their instrumentation and vocals in an act of camaraderie.

Other than a break between Brooklyn-based alt. country outfit The Felice Brothers and one of the most anticipated acts of the evening, Dave Rawlings Machine, each set seamlessly transitioned into the next as musicians would join in for a handful of collaborative songs while others made their way off stage.

Book ending the single-act performances were sets from Justin Townes Earle and tour organizers Old Crow Medicine Show; but while Earle’s sincerity and Old Crow’s raw energy seemed to be fitting of their placements, it was the fraternal nature of the Big Surprise Band that left concert goers with big smiles and an energetic high like no other.
