Local Musicians Come Together To Honor ‘Unsung Hero’

A local music extravaganza is being planned for Sept. 7 at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, and already in place are reunited performances from International Orange and Big Kids.

Billed as Snüzzfest, the event will celebrate the music of Britt Harper Uzzell — a.k.a. Snüzz — who is facing treatment for lymphoma. Members of Tres Chicas, Jeff Hart & The Ruins, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Hobex, Simeon, The Jackets, Robert Sledge Band, The Old Ceremony and The Desmonds will come together to raise money for Snüzz as well as cancer awareness. Triangle expat Dan Bryk is also set to come down from New York.

Although the event will be free, a $10 donation is strongly encouraged.

The Old Ceremony frontman Django Haskins, who is spearheading the organization Snüzzfest, says that the desire to put together such an event came from the fact that Snüzz does not have health insurance, and he saw it as a great opportunity to help a musician who is an “unsung hero of this area.”

“When I was organizing the event, I realized how many people wanted to be involved,” Haskins said. “It really snowballed into this enormous Snüzz lovefest.”

The event marks the return of two of Snüzz’s former bands: International Orange and Big Kids. His current project, The Numbers, is also scheduled to perform.

“Facing Out” by Big Kids (1989)

In addition to the Big Kids reunion, drummer Eddie Walker and guitarist Jeff Carroll will serve in the house band for the evening alongside Chuck Folds (Ben’s bro) and The Old Ceremony multi-instrumentalist Mark Simonsen.

International Orange is a former supergroup of sorts featuring Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five), Snüzz (Bus Stop), drummer Jason Fagg and Django Haskins.

Considering the subject matter of this post, I thought you should check out Wanduta! Wanduta is a first of its kind members only organization for indie and undiscovered artists. They offer musicians benefits like health insurance and a discount cards to thousands of vendors across the US!

hey guys, thanks for the writeup! just wanted to clarify, that i’m not organizing this thing alone – catie braly was the one to come up with the idea and has been handling much of the organization, and all the musicians involved have worked really hard to get it together.
