Having started as part of a graduate thesis project for emcee Pierce Freelon, the guys in hip-hop/jazz collective The Beast decided that the music they created was just too good to let go.

Two years later, The Beast has released two EPs and plans to release its debut full-length in the fall. One of those EPs was even recorded with Grammy Award nominated jazz singer Nnenna Freelon — who happens to be Pierce’s mother.
The Catalyst EP features two tracks recorded in one take at Pure Sound Studios in Durham, and the group is offering the album as a free download. In exchange for the download, The Beast is asking for people to make a donation to the Durham Arts Council.
The EP features the brand new tracks “Once Again” and “Come Up, Come Down,” and includes contributing vocals from Nnenna on “Once Again,” and The Proclivities guitarist Chris Boerner on the track “Come Up, Come Down.”
