John Darnielle posted an update on The Mountain Goats‘ Web site this afternoon announcing the details for his forthcoming new LP, The Life of the World to Come.

The album is due in stores Oct. 6 through 4AD, and was recorded between April and June at Electrical Audio with Brandon Eggleston, Sonic Ranch with John Congleton and Baucom Road with Scott Solter. It was mixed at Baucom Road with Solter.

Despite the track titles all referencing Bible verses, the album’s concept is less about Darnielle’s immersion in Christianity and more a statement of the poetic imagery and lessons of the Bible.

“I guess the obvious question is going to be: ‘John, have you had some sort of religious awakening?’ and while I guess lots of people might want to be coy about answering that, that’s never really been my style, so: no. It’s not like that,” Darnielle writes. “It’s not some heavy-narrative-distance deal either, though, and it’s not a screed. It’s twelve new songs: twelve hard lessons the Bible taught me, kind of.”

The Life of the World to Come features Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster and multi-instrumentalist Peter Hughes, as well as Final Fantasy‘s Owen Pallett on strings.
