“Kaufman’s Ballad” had been making its rounds through the usual music blogs, but we finally have an MP3 to share with you.

The track is reportedly inspired by the story of Gram Parsons‘ road manager — Phil Kaufman — stealing Parson’s body to burn it at Joshua Tree per Parson’s request.

“Kaufman’s Ballad” by Megafaun

“Who else could pull off a song that sounds like the buxom man-folk of Crosby, Stills and Nash, but moves with the finesse of Reichian process music– a song, no less, about the desert immolation of Gram Parsons’ corpse?” Pitchfork’s Brian Howe writes.

“Drones follow pristine ballads. Plucky bar hops are stormed by free noise howls. Water drips over hand drum circles. Pastorals implode,” Stereogum adds. “And, of course, there are those three-part Crosby, Stills and Nash harmonies.”

“Kaufman’s Ballad” is the second track on Megafaun’s sophomore LP — Gather, Form & Fly — that is due in stores July 21 through Hometapes.
