The first signs of a planned amphitheatre for downtown Raleigh are popping up.

Crews are moving dirt at the site across the street from the City’s new Convention Center, in anticipation of the new live entertainment venue, which would hold around 5,000 people.

Doug Grissom, assistant director for the Raleigh Convention Center, said the deal between the City and entertainment company Live Nation, which will oversee some of the concerts, is not yet final.

Grissom said they still have to work out details about sharing the rest of the project’s financing, which should be around $4 million.

Both the City and Live Nation had agreed to contribute to part of the project at no cost, with the City providing the land and Live Nation providing its steel skeleton and fabric covering for the structure.

Grissom said part of the City’s cost could be offset by selling naming rights.

If a deal is reached soon, Grissom said the amphitheatre could be complete by spring 2010.
