This morning I woke up to an e-mail from Bombadil’s Bryan Rahija, and it was all too familiar. Once again Bryan was sad to inform me that the band would have to cancel its performance on Sessions at Studio B due to the condition of Daniel Michalak’s hands from a serious case of tendinitis.
“The situation with Daniel’s hands [is] getting worse by the day.” Bryan wrote. “And so after much consideration, we have decided to cancel all of the remaining shows on our schedule.”
The band further explained through a blog post that the tendinitis has progressed to a point where Daniel “cannot brush his teeth without feeling pain, much less perform with the rest of the band.”
While some bands may feel suited to enlist a replacement player, it is not in the spirit of Bombadil to leave one of its core members behind.
“At the end of the day, we did not feel that it was in the artistic spirit of the band to continue and play shows without him.”
Although the band still says it plans to release its new album, Tarpits and Canyonlands, on July 7, the members are not sure when they will be able to perform live together again.
“Some doctors say that a three month break would suffice, while others forecast a two-year recovery period,” the band writes. “But in the meantime, we’ll be writing new songs and keeping you up to date of our activities.”
Bryan went on to explain that Bombadil is also still planning to celebrate the release of the album, only the party will have to exclude a performance element. Hopefully we’ll have those details as soon as they are available.
Until we can see Bombadil well again, we wish Daniel a speedy recovery.
