On April 29 and 30, cult bluesman Dexter Romweber was joined by his sister Sara in Jack White’s home studio on a few tracks for an up-coming 7″ vinyl single.
The album will be released later this month on White’s own label, Third Man, and features two tracks produced by the White Stripes frontman — who is admittedly a huge fan of Romweber.
“Dexter Romweber was and is a huge influence on my music,” White said in the Romweber documentary Two Headed Cow. “I owned all of his records as a teenager … [He] is one of the best kept secrets of the rock ‘n’ roll underground.”
The tracks feature contributions in addition to production from White, who admits the experience was a dream come true.
“At one point, Dex was in room with his guitar and Jack was behind the control board,” Sara told Metromix Nashville. “Jack had the biggest smile on his face and he said, ‘You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear that guitar tone in my studio.’”
One of the songs the pairing yielded was a cover of the Geeshie Wiley tune “Last Kind Word Blues.” The song features White lending his vocals and guitar work to Sara on drums and Dex on piano.
“There’s electric and acoustic guitar,” Dex describes of the song to Metromix. “It’s a little bit more wide open and full-blown, a little bit harder edged — it’s not done folkie or acoustic blues.”
The second song is an as-of-yet-unreleased new track called “The Wind Did Blow,” which Dex describes as “kind of a dark, sort of hillbilly blues … folkie, rock and roll thing.”
Dex says the song features Sara playing drums and tambourine, White playing bass and singing, and him playing electric guitar, singing and playing organ. Later, Dex says “Jack put a saw sound on it — it’s him sawing on a board to get a sound the song needed.”
If you missed it, you can catch Dex Romweber Duo’s performance on Sessions at Studio B over at the video’s landing page. The pair performed “Picture of You,” “Lonesome Train” and “Ruins of Berlin” from the album Ruins of Berlin.
