When John Darnielle hit the road in February with John Vanderslice it was almost inevitable the two prolific songwriters would collaborate on some kind of album.
That “kind of album” is the vinyl-only EP Moon Colony Bloodbath that The Mountain Goats frontman describes as “Some of the songs have something to do with a loose rock opera/’concept album’ idea about organ harvesting colonies on the moon and the employees thereof, who spent their off months living in secluded opulence in remote American locations. Concepts like this are actually more fun when you abandon them but leave their traces kicking around, so that’s what we did.”
According to Pitchfork, the album was recorded specifically for the tour. However, the few copies that remain will be released later through Beggars Group and 3 Beads of Sweat. Locally, the album will be available at Bull City Records in Durham.
The dB’s guitarist and famed producer Chris Stamey guests on a few of the tracks on the album. Stamey also recorded the album in his own studio in Chapel Hill.
Durham-based Horse & Buggy Press designed the cover for the limited-release vinyl, which features artwork by Michael Pajon. Horse & Buggy Press also designed the cover of The Mountain Goats’ 2008 EP Black Pear Tree.
