Having formed the core of the band as 10-year-olds, the band played all original tunes (now remember, they were 10!) except for covers of a band who may be obscure to many, but near and dear to the Triangle community’s heart –- Archers of Loaf. And that indie rock beginning has carried through 15 years later.
Listening to the band’s 2007 debut self-titled EP, it may seem that the band is pretty familiar with the music of Pavement. But surprisingly, Stephen Malkmus’ legendary indie rock band had little influence on HNMTF. Rather, frontman Duncan Webster cut his teeth on local acts such as Archers and Superchunk and Washington, D.C.’s own Burning Airlines.
Obscure Sound wrote: “If it were the early ’90s, most of the songs on their EP would be college radio staples. If we are lucky, they will never feel the pressure to revert into a more modernized version of their former selves. If they keep at it, they will hold no regrets.”
The band released its first full-length album on April 7 through Churchkey Records, a label based in Durham. Looking for Bruce was recorded in 2008 at Magpie Cage studios in Baltimore, Md. with producer and Burning Airlines frontman J. Robbins.
