Mammoth Records may not sign new artists or release new material, but that doesn’t mean the label can’t celebrate its 21st birthday in style.
Now that it is legal for the former Triangle-based label to enjoy a few alcoholic beverages, many Mammoth artists of yore will reunite for a birthday party at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro this Saturday, April 25.
The show will feature performances from Jason Ross and Thomas Juliano of Seven Mary Three, Katharine Whalen, Chris Phillips and Stu Cole of Squirrel Nut Zippers, and John Strohm of Blake Babies and Antenna. Dillon Fence, fronted by Greg Humphreys, will headline the celebration.
Mammoth Records was founded in 1989 by Jay Faires in Carrboro. In 1993 the label joined with Atlantic Records; but in 1998 Faires sold the label to The Walt Disney Company, which merged it with Hollywood Records in 2003.
Like many of the current Triangle labels, camaraderie was ever-present within Mammoth and its artists.
“It’s a cool experience,” Humphreys told the Durham Herald-Sun. “I’ve been on some other record labels — it’s different when you’re so far removed from the label’s town.”
Tickets are available for $15 in advance or $18 the day of the show.
You can catch Greg Humphreys live on Sessions at Studio B tomorrow, April 23 at 4 p.m. Greg will perform a few songs from his solo album Trunk Songs, and we’ll talk with him about his time with Mammoth and the writing of his new album.
