CARY — In an effort to satisfy concert goers and neighbors, the Cary Town Council voted Wednesday to rework its policy on volume and sound monitoring at Koka Booth Amphitheatre.

In all, the town plans to spend around $25,000 to move the sound mixing position further from the stage, increase sound monitoring in surrounding neighborhoods and use other techniques to improve the concert experience while not disturbing neighbors.

The new policy will change the sound limit to 95db at 100 feet from the stage, which is the volume equivalent of the old policy of 92db at 80 feet from the stage. The town measures decibel levels of a concert from the mix position.

During the 2008 season, three bands were fined for exceeding the maximum level, according to staff reports.

Residents in the Lion’s Gate neighborhood have complained the sound from concerts at Koka Booth is too loud.
