The oft talked about Ben Folds a cappella album finally has a track list, and a few North Carolina groups will grace the covers album.

Opening the album is Spartones from UNC-Greensboro covering “Not the Same” from Folds’ first solo album, Rockin’ the Suburbs. Following the Spartones is UNC-Chapel Hill’s own Loreleis with their cover of “Jesusland” from Folds’ sophomore solo LP Songs for Silverman.

The album was recorded by Folds and his wife with six area mics and four hours dedicated to each session. With the album’s release, Folds insists on the validity of the project and says that he considers it as much a part of his catalog as any of his own albums.

“This is not a novelty … I consider this my new record,” Folds says. “I’m incredibly proud of this.”

Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella will feature 13 tracks covered by various University a cappella groups as well as Folds’ own a cappella renditions of “Effington” from Way To Normal and the Ben Folds Five song “Boxing” from the band’s self-titled debut album. The album will also feature The Newtones from Newton South High School covering “Evaporated” from Ben Folds Five’s Whatever And Ever Amen. Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella will see a release on April 7, 2009 through Sony Records.

“Not the Same” by the UNC-Greensboro Spartones

This will be Folds’ third album he’s released in less than a year. On Sept. 30, 2008 he released Way to Normal and followed it with Stems and Seeds — a collection of remixed, remastered and re-sequenced versions of tracks from Way to Normal — on Feb. 10, 2009.
