*UPDATE*

Brooklyn-based indie rock band The National will perform at either Meymandi Concert Hall or Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on May 28, 4AD and the band’s Web site announced. While 4AD is saying the band will perform at Meymand Concert Hall, The National’s Web site it reporting Lincoln Theatre to be the site of the May 28 performance.

Either way, The National will perform somewhere in Raleigh on May 28 and the concert will be presented by Cat’s Cradle — who is reporting Lincoln Theatre.

The band’s last album, 2007’s Boxer, skyrocketed the band to national (pardon the pun) attention and peaked at number 68 on Billboard’s Top 200.

Boxer was also named as the album of the year by Paste magazine. In 2008, director Vincent Moon released the film A Skin, A Night documenting the band’s making of the album. The DVD for the documentary also includes the Virginia EP, which features The National’s stellar live cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Mansion on the Hill.”

“Mansion on the Hill” by The National

The National last appeared in the Triangle on June 10, 2008 when they performed with R.E.M. on their Accelerate tour along with Modest Mouse.

On Feb. 17, 4AD will release the double-disc Dark Was The Night compilation that was curated by The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner. The sales from the album will benefit the Red Hot Organization, “an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS.”

While featuring a new song from The National, Aaron Dessner also teamed up with Triangle expatriate Justin Vernon on the track “Big Red Machine.”

In the band’s holiday newsletter, The National revealed that they will begin recording its new album in April with a tentative 2010 release planned.

“We are in the early stages of making the follow-up to Boxer,” the band writes. “We will let you know when we can what the plans are for its release, but it’s likely to find its way to you in 2010.”

Another discrepancy in the venue comes with the ticket distributor. Ticketmaster has Meymandi listed while etix is reporting Lincoln Theatre. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 13 for $22 in advance and $25 the day of the show.

[ It was reported earlier through confirmation from Lincoln Theatre's Web site that the band would perform at Lincoln Theatre on the announced date. 4AD then reported Meymandi to be the venue and later The National reported Lincoln Theatre. Now let's get a definitive confirmation, anyone? ]
