Wilco will release its new concert DVD exclusively in independent record stores on Record Store Day — April 18 — and the film will hit the racks at your local Best Buy two weeks later.
Ashes of American Flags was recorded during the band’s 2008 tour in Tulsa, Okla.; New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; Nashville; and Washington, D.C.
“My introduction to a lot of great music and to the ‘music business’ came from hanging around and eventually working at independent record stores in Belleville, Ill., and St. Louis many years back,” Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy told Billboard.com. “Even if I wasn’t in a band, I’d still support Record Store Day. It’s a great thing, and I’m glad we could do something special with them for our DVD.”
Nonesuch senior VP of marketing Peter Clancy says that although the label supports independent stores and appreciates the chance to give such properties this exclusive, traditional retail stores remain important to Nonesuch because they make up about 80 percent of the label’s sales.
Schoolkids Records — in its bright and shiny new location on Hillsborough Street — has confirmed it will be involved in Record Store Day, and although they are not not sure when they will receive the DVDs, customers can expect to pick up Ashes of American Flags on Record Store Day.
Chaz from Chaz’s Bull City Records in Durham says that the store will be involved in Record Store Day but he is not sure whether or not he will receive copies of the new Wilco DVD. Also in Durham, Offbeat Music has confirmed that it will “do something” for Record Store Day but the store is actually independent from the music coalitions involved in day’s organization, so they are doubtful that the store will receive the Wilco exclusive.
According to Billboard, other exclusives on Record Store Day include a Matador Records 7″ with Sonic Youth covering Beck’s “Pay No Mind” on the A-side and Beck covering Sonic Youth’s “Green Light” on the B-side; a previously unreleased recording of a Pavement concert in Cologne, Germany from 1997; and a 7″ with Jay Reatard’s “Hang Them All” on one side and Sonic Youth’s “No Garage” on the other. There will also be a double 10″ pressing of My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges and a series of Radiohead EPs on vinyl.
Pitchfork has a nice rundown of the exclusives customers can expect on April 18.
