A very early rumor indicates that the “the best band in the world” will make a long overdue stop in the Triangle this summer. While no official dates have been announced, it looks like U2 will perform at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham during its up-coming No Line on the Horizon world tour.
As already noted, this is a very early rumor and could not be confirmed or denied.
Live Nation Vice President of Communications John Vlautin said during a phone conversation on Tuesday that it is still too early to make any announcements, though he said he expects one to be made sometime in the second week of March.
Vlautin further said he has not received a list of dates or locations for the up-coming tour.
On Feb. 13, Boston Globe reported an early rumor that U2 would perform at Gillette Stadium in Boston in mid-September.
“The Irish band hasn’t announced the deets of its summer tour yet, but we’re told the itinerary will include a stop at Gillette Stadium in mid-September, probably the 20th,” the Globe reports.
The Wallace Wade performance would be U2′s first show in the Triangle since the band’s April 23, 1983 performance at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. In 1997 the band was scheduled to perform at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, however the show was canceled due to damage to a video backdrop that was sustained the previous night in Washington, D.C.
U2′s new album, No Line On The Horizon, is scheduled to hit shelves March 3, 2009; though the album was leaked on Feb. 28 when Universal Music Australia’s online accidentally released the album for sale digitally. The band has since made the album available for streaming on its MySpace page.
In March 2008, U2 struck a 12-year deal with Live Nation. As per the agreement, the concert promoter will oversee the group’s touring, merchandise and Web site.
We will keep you updated as more information regarding this rumor is revealed.
