The days of The Ritz in Raleigh are long gone, which is sad considering the venue’s long history of great shows. However, while the building’s new tenants use the venue mostly as a Hispanic danceclub, they continue to host stellar performances every blue moon. Since changing the name to Disco Rodeo, the venue has hosted bands from Muse to Interpol to The Flaming Lips.
Although Disco Rodeo’s latest offering has yet to show up on the band’s or record label’s schedules, Cat’s Cradle has announced that it will host indie alternative rockers Modest Mouse on March 11. Portland-based Mimicking Birds — who is also the newest band signed to Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock’s Glacial Pace label — will join the band at the show.
Modest Mouse’s last offering was 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, which featured contributing guitar work from former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
“He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, ‘okay, let’s tour too,’” Brock told Rolling Stone of Marr’s involvement in the band. “Then he was pretty much a member of the band — not pretty much. He’s a full blown member of the band.”
Unfortunately, due to a commitment to his current project — UK-based The Cribs — Marr will not join Modest Mouse on the band’s up-coming tour, and Jim Fairchild of Grandaddy will fill in on guitar duty.
Modest Mouse is expected to release an as-of-yet untitled new EP sometime in 2009. The album will feature unreleased songs from Good News for People Who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.
Tickets for the concert at Disco Rodeo are on sale through etix for $32.
[UPDATE: It just dawned on us that even though former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr won't be joining Modest Mouse at Disco Rodeo on March 11, fans will still be able to get their The Smiths fix across town in Durham when Morrissey performs the same night ... quite the dilema.]
