It’s Coming: David Menconi’s Eight Great Local Acts

We were so busy yesterday with photo slideshows, Howlies and smoke machines that we totally forgot to mention the N&O’s teaser for the sixth installment of “Eight Great Local Acts.”

For the past six years, N&O music critic and On the Beat blogger David Menconi picks the eight local musicians who he feels will make their rightful mark on the music scene. Last year, the list stirred controversy when Independent Weekly published an article criticizing the annual list’s intentions as well as the N&O’s local music coverage.

From watching the teaser, anyone who frequents local music shows should point out at least a couple of the acts. However, Menconi’s full feature is not due until Friday’s issue of News & Observer, and it only seems right to leave the honor of naming these “Great Eight” bands to the list curator.

Like last year, we can look forward to a “Great Eight” showcase at Local 506 in Chapel Hill where we can check out a few of the bands who made the cut. The show is scheduled for Feb. 13.

On our end, you can check out an interview with David Menconi right here on Music.MyNC during which he discusses the list and the process of choosing the bands.

[Did you notice our "Menconi-styled" headline?]
