The blogosphere is abuzz this morning with the announcement of the 2009 Bonnaroo Music Festival lineup. Kicking off in 2002, the annual hippiefest attracts some 80,000 attendants each year since 2005; and last year, 156 bands and performers appeared at the festival.
Like the Coachella lineup, we’re not going to list every one of the 76 bands who will perform at the show; but it is safe to say attendants can look forward to Phish, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Gov’t Mule, Merle Haggard, moe., Béla Fleck & Toumani Diabate, as well as many others of the jam band breed.
Unlike the Coachella lineup, there will not be any bands coming directly from the Triangle, but there are a few expatriates who will make the trek. Former DeYarmond Edison frontman Justin Vernon will take his latest project, Bon Iver, to the event along with UNC-Chapel Hill alumna Tift Merritt. Andrew Bird — who first made his mark on the music scene with Chapel Hill’s Squirrel Nut Zippers — and Asheville-based Toubab Krewe are also scheduled to perform.
Once again, I’m calling on the folks at Merge Records to make XX Merge the be-all end-all music festival of the summer.
Andrew Bird and Bon Iver recently unleashed new music on Jan. 20 and Tift Merritt will return to the Triangle with a concert at Fletcher Opera Theatre in Raleigh on May 1. Toubab Krewe is scheduled to release Live At The Orange Peel on March 10 and the group will hit Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on Feb. 6.
