CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina’s Anoop Desai is about to find out if he’s a finalist on Fox’s American Idol.

The University of North Carolina graduate sang “Angel of Mine” on the show Tuesday night. He was among a group of 12, of whom three will be chosen for the finals on Wednesday.

The judges were lukewarm on Desai’s performance but said they were still fans. Paula Abdul said “America has connected with you in a large way.” Simon Cowell said the song was too grown-up for the 22-year-old.

Even if he doesn’t win Wednesday, Desai could be chosen in a final results show in a few weeks, when the judges pick their three favorites for the group of 12 finalists. The public will choose the other nine.

[ NOTE ]
I don’t watch American Idol, I will never watch American Idol. I don’t look down upon anyone who enjoys the program, but it’s just not my thing. While UNC graduate Anoop Desai remains in the competition, I will maintain posting AP updates and I wish Anoop well. Good luck Anoop!

I will be glad when the local news realizes there were TWO from NC. Ricky Braddy was born and raised in Elizabeth City, NC. He was living in Nashville during his Louisville audition.

He was by far the best performer of the night and in a recent interview, Paula has named him one of her 3 favorites in all of the 36.
