CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina’s Anoop Desai didn’t survive to the final 12 of American Idol — not yet, at least.

The University of North Carolina graduate wasn’t selected Wednesday night as a finalist on the Fox show. He could still be selected in a few weeks when the judges choose three finalists without public input.

The finalists chosen Wednesday night were 21-year-old Alexis Grace from Memphis, Tenn.; 27-year-old Michael Sarver from Jasper, Texas; and 28-year-old Danny Gokey of Milwaukee.

The 22-year-old Desai sang “Angel of Mine” on the show Tuesday night.

The public will choose nine of the 12 finalists with the judges choosing the remaining three.
