Merge Records recording artists The Music Tapes will embark on a national tour in February; and while the band will spend much of the month on the West coast, it will head back east in March.

Of its East coast tour dates, The Music Tapes will perform at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on March 5 with Nana Grizol and Brian Dewan.

The Music Tapes is fronted by former Neutral Milk Hotel banjo/bass guitar/saw player and member of The Elephant 6 Recording Company Julian Koster. Koster released a solo album, The Singing Saw at Christmastime, on Oct. 7, 2008 and The Music Tapes’ sophomore album, Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes, on Aug. 19, 2008.

“Majesty” by The Music Tapes

The new album features Koster’s typical array of instruments and non-instruments.

“I just find the imaginary more real than the physical. Magic, the way we find things beautiful, the light behind eyes, kindness, and how we want to serve and protect the things we care about, these things seem like the real foundation of the world to me,” Koster explains of creating music. “I hope that the songs on this record can be more that just postcards from a world, but an invitation to it, to anyone at all who may find such a place comforting and nice.”

Those who have never experienced The Music Tapes live can expect its typical band members being joined by a seven-foot-tall metronome and Static the Television.
