Power pop band The Smithereens will headline First Night Raleigh in downtown Raleigh, Artsplosure announced Friday.
First Night Raleigh is a New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown that includes the annual acorn drop, fireworks at midnight and plenty of activities for children and adults.
Artsplosure described The Smithereens this way:
“Dressed in leather, brandishing heavy guitars and an unabashed fetish for British Invasion pop, The Smithereens were an anomaly in the American college rock scene of the late ’80s. The band became a college and modern rock hit with Top 40 singles like “A Girl Like You,” “Only a Memory” and “Too Much Passion.” The Smithereens retain a sizable cult following which helps them tour successfully through today, with all original members. The band has also released a pair of compilations; the hits package Blown to Smithereens and the rarities collection Attack of the Smithereens.”
I will simply say that they are one of my favorite live bands.
