Ryan Adams Appreciates Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Black Metal

When I come up with my list for Top Albums of the Year, I usually have four prerequisites that an album must meet before it can make the list.

  1. 1. The year an album was originally released –- digitally or physically –- is the year it will be considered for the list.
  2. 2. An album must be comprised of original material. It can not be live or a “Best of” compilation.
  3. 3. There must be one dominate artist throughout an album.
  4. 4. The album must be a full-length LP. EPs will not be considered.

Well, not everyone abides by these rules; and that’s fine. Ryan Adams is one such music fan who goes by his own rules of list making. In fact, it seems that any musical release is fair game when Adams is compiling his “Best of.”

As a part of an on-going feature, Filter asked Adams to pick his top-9 albums of 2008. The results … well, I think my list would have been a tad different.

Testament The Formation of Damnation (Nuclear Blast America)
Krallice Krallice (Profound Lore)
The Killers Day and Age (Island Records)
The Smiths The Sound of The Smiths (Rhino)
Metallica Death Magnetic (Warner Bros.)
Mariah Carey E=MC² (Island)
Coldplay Viva La Vida (Capitol)
Fleet Foxes Sun Giant EP (Sub Pop)
Ihsahn Angl (Candlelight)
