It’s no secret that Superchunk is one of the Triangle’s famed bands that surfaced in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In fact, frontman Mac McCaughan and bassist Laura Ballance started Durham-based Merge Records as a way to release Superchunk singles.
What may not be so well-known is that the video for the track “Precision Auto” from the band’s 1993 album On the Mouth was filmed on and around Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street. Instantly recognizable are Rosemary Street and Franklin Street locations Linda’s and the old Schoolkids Records.
Norwood Cheek directed the video and has since gone on to direct videos for Squirrel Nut Zippers, Ben Folds Five, AFI, 12 Stones, the Donnas and Soul Coughing. The video for “Precision Auto” can be found on the DVD Crowding Up Your Visual Field, which features a collection of Superchunk videos and live performances.
