In October, McClatchey Broadcasting announced that the company would bring talk show host Don Imus back to Triangle airwaves.
Today, the company announced that the return would come sooner rather than later as “Imus in the Morning” is set to air Monday, Dec. 1 on 620 The Bull from 6 until 10 a.m.
“The response to Imus returning to the Triangle has been huge,” McClatchey Broadcasting General Manager Brian Maloney said. “Listeners and advertisers are anxious to get ‘Imus in the Morning’ back on the air, and that factored in to us accelerating the start date to Dec. 1. We look forward to the show once again becoming a staple of morning drive time in this region.”
The show previously aired on 850 The Buzz for 11 years before it was cancelled on April, 12, 2007 when CBS Radio cancelled Imus’ program. This cancellation came as a result of remarks Imus made in regard to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team that were largely regarded as racist.
Presidential candidate Barack Obama called Imus’ comment, “Divisive, hurtful, and offensive to Americans of all backgrounds … With a public platform comes a trust. As far as I’m concerned, he violated that trust.”
After civil rights activists Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton demanded that CBS President and CEO Les Moonves fire Imus, Moonves issued a statement cancelling “Imus in the Morning.”
Imus made his return to morning radio on Dec. 2, 2007. This came after New York talk-radio station WABC offered Imus a five-year financial package worth up to $40 million.
During it’s tenure in the market, “Imus in the Morning” was one of the Triangle’s highest-rated morning shows with a target demographic of men aged 25 to 54.

I am so glad he is back. His firing was a disgrace that was used by race-baiting hypocrites.
